MOEMS

Last modified: Wednesday, January 02, 2008

Short for Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems, also known as optical MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) and generally taken to include waveguides, diffraction gratings, moving mirror and moving bubble devices. The primary goal is to endow systems with the capability to alter or modulate the path of a light beam, and, in some cases, to temporally or spectrally modify the light beam. The most common micro-optical elements are those that reflect, diffract or refract light. MOEMS is the manipulation of light in one, two, or three-dimensional space.

How to Benefit and Use Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MOEMS)
While neither term is quite yet a household acronym, the term MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) is more common than MOEMS (Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems), though both refer to essentially the same technology.

Micro Technology With Macro Effect
Micro-opto-electromechanical systems (MOEMS) show promise of high growth fueled by applications in data storage, displays, sensors, biotech, manufacturing, and aerospace.

MicroOptoElectroMechanical Systems (MOEMS)
The primary goal of the MicroElectroMechanical (MEMS) Program is to develop the technology to merge sensing, actuation, and computing in order to realize new systems that bring enhanced levels of perception, control, and performance to military and commercial systems.
